Vitamin B1

Cognitive Function: A study done in 1997 looked at 120 female university students with adequate thiamin status. Subjects took either placebo or 50 mg/d of thiamin for a two month period. Blood samples showed improved thiamin status and subjects reported more clear headedness and energy.

Mood: Vitamins and their derivatives are an important part of the nervous system. Thiamin is essential for the breakdown of glucose, the major energy source for the brain.

A study looked at healthy adults who took ten times the RDA of nine vitamins or placebo for one year. There was an association between baseline concentrations of thiamin and poor mood among women. The researchers concluded that once thiamin concentrations were improved in the women so was the subject's mood.
